Dr. Michael C. Foster is past president of the American Heart Association's South Carolina affiliate, and has served on its board of directors. He also served as the chief of the Department of Cardiology and director of the Cardiac Rehab program at Providence Health, which is nationally recognized for its cardiovascular services and program. He was also president of the South Carolina Heart Center. He is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and is Principal Investigator in five clinical trials. After earning his MD at Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Foster served an internship at Boston University Affiliated Hospital. He completed residencies at Indiana University Medical Center and University Hospital, Boston University Medical Center. He completed his fellowship in cardiology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Boston Veterans Administration Medical Center. He is certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Interventional Cardiology.
Through his participation in over fifty-three documented clinical investigations, Michael C. Foster, MD has been impacting cardiovascular medicine for over thirty-six years. Not only has his research contributed to the advancement in treatment of Coronary Artery Disease, but he has also personally provided life changing direction, one-on-one, to individuals suffering from cardiovascular disease. While Dr. Foster is a leader in his field who has given presentations across the United States and abroad, he makes all who are working with him a valued part of a team. He listens to input and fosters true collaboration when developing a patient’s plan of care. Dr. Foster talks the talk and walks the walk for disease prevention. He served as president of the American Heart Association's South Carolina affiliate, and he himself walked with survivors the at the 2015 AHA Heart Walk. Recently, he attended the 100th birthday of one of Providence’s cardiac rehab participants, taking time out of his busy day to show support for those going the extra mile to take care of their heart. When the cardiopulmonary rehab department discussed opening its facility for employees, knowing the value of structured exercise, he was behind the venture 100%.
Dr. Foster served as the chief of the Department of Cardiology, director of Cardiac Rehabilitation, and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Services at Providence, as well as president of the South Carolina Heart Center. He also served as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Other leadership roles include team cardiologist for the TAVR program at Providence Hospitals, serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the South Carolina Chapter of the American College of Cardiology and serves on the National Board of the Cardiology Advocacy Alliance. Dr. Foster has also served as a medical advisor to multiple medical device companies. Dr. Foster’s current practice at South Carolina Heart Center is focused on the field of complex coronary interventions and structural heart disease. Dr. Foster received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and internship at Boston University Affiliated Hospitals. He completed residencies at Indiana University Medical Center, University Hospital, and completed his fellowship in cardiology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Boston Veterans Administration Medical Center.
In 2016, he was inducted into the prestigious Society of Saint Luke, established to celebrate and honor physicians and leaders for their distinguished service to patients and their service to the community.
